Be You.

If you’re not feeling vibrant, energized, glowing, happy and healthy in every fiber of your being, something is wrong.

Very wrong. Because we all deserve to feel our very best each and every day. We all should strive to be the very best-versions-of-ourselves every. single. day.

Furthermore–if you’re not feeling your best and you find yourself comparing yourself to others, stop. There is only one you–and YOU should be YOU. Not Jenny from the block. Nope. Just You.

Despite the fact that we all constantly feel some form of stress, fatigue, that we’re not the right weight, that we don’t do our jobs the best way, blah, blah, blah…they are not a normal feelings and we should never accept them as normal feelings.

Put your health first and get honest about what needs to change so that you can always feel amazing. So that you can always strive to be the best-version-of-yourself.

An easy way to start feeling amazing, is to eliminate products that have been exposing you to chemicals and toxins. In this article, studies have shown that those cleaning products that you buy off the shelf have been found to be just as impactful on your health as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Those candles you love? Same thing.

But guess what? You can make a huge difference and feel your health soar simply by choosing to become a member to Young Living. YL provides alternatives to candles, cleaning products, bath and body products, makeup, supplements…you name it. And you can feel confident in using Young Living products because of the Seed to Seal guarantee.

So you do you–and you do what is necessary to feel amazing.

If you’ve known me for any length of time, or if you don’t know me at all, for that matter, you may have figured out a little quirk about me. I love to keep those that have chosen to love me unconditionally on their toes. ALL THE TIME.

And that my friends, is no exaggeration. I’m spontaneous, but I am not. I have horrible habits. I make terrible decisions. But, at the same time, I have fantastic habits and make fantastic decisions. I love to help wherever I am needed, I love to donate time, talent and treasure to organizations that are dear to my heart. I am literally all over the place.

And for YEARS I battled with this. “Be the person you’re supposed to be.” “Set goals to accomplish success.” “Just behave.”

Oh those phrases drove me crazy. I went to school to become an advertising extraordinaire. Five years into my career, I was miserable and had an unbelievable calling to be in the classroom.

So, I went to get my Masters and I became a teacher.

And I was there for almost 8 years–but then found myself miserable again. I mean– a deep, dark misery that stemmed from events completely out of my control. But as each event occurred, I found myself spiraling out of control into a place I didn’t want to be.

When you get into your headspace, really get into it, you realize that there is really only one shot at this life, and it really isn’t necessary to be miserable in your choices. So I made a conscious decision to find my new happy. To follow my joy.

Is that path easy? Absolutely not. It has twists, turns, bumps and dark places. It includes learning to live in a way that you have never lived before. New habits, new schedules, new everything. And it is overwhelming at times.

Why do I write all this for the world to read? Because, I want you to know that you are not alone. EVER. There is somebody, somewhere going through a very similar journey as you.

And most importantly, maybe you’re approaching a crossroads that is frightening and you are terrified to choose the wrong path. Just know this:

“Other people’s opinions are none of your business.”

I recently read “Girl, Wash Your Face-Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are so You Can Become Who You Are Meant to Be” by Rachel Hollis. It has been very eye opening to say the least. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it.

Yep. IT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS what others think of you. Because YOU DO YOU, good/bad/everything in between.

I don’t strive to be perfect anymore. I own up to my mistakes, I own up to my successes. I own up to my life. I strive to be imperfect — I’m perfect.

The best decision I have made in this turbulent year or so has been to join the oil community. It’s so much more than products. It’s a group of individuals that have come from every walk of life and joined together under one common passion: essential oils.

Sleep. Wellness promotion. You name it, there’s an oil for that. And a community that is so happy to walk you through the journey. If you are the least bit interested in what these can do for you, I encourage you to visit The Oily Life and join us (links are provided to get started). If oils aren’t your thing–still check it out, you will be surprised how versatile oils are for EVERYONE.

And I’m finding my happy. I want the same for you. If all you get from reading this stream of thought is that you are not alone, then I will be happy for you. Because you are not.

Let’s be perfectly imperfect together.

40 Days – Day 24

Eeek. The thought makes me cringe. This has always been one of my weakest points. What it is that is “controlling” me changes, but I have ALWAYS been weak in self-control and what I let run my life.

Do you struggle with something enslaving your life? Making you less authentic–more materialistic? It could be your phone. That little piece of technology rules the world. Think about it. When you go out in public (a restaurant, a park, Disney World…) everyone is walking with their heads down, staring at their phones. Or they have headphones on, drowning out any potential for a in person conversation.

Matthew Kelly says today: “You know, one of the ways that we are called as Christians to exercise this self-control is through our appetites. We are creatures of appetite. We have all types of appetites that come every day: appetite for food, appetite for drink, appetite for sleep. Many of these appetites are given to us by God as part of his design of us in order to keep us alive. They’re survival mechanisms, right? But even something very, very good can be twisted and turned into something very, very damaging or even diabolical.

The reality is that these appetites that we have, they’re not going away. There’s no making peace with them. We either control them, or they control us. They’re either our slaves, or we’re they’re slaves. There’s no middle ground. And so living an authentic life, living an integrated life, requires that we learn to control our appetites. You struggle with some, I struggle with others. I like food, I don’t know if you’ve noticed.

The reality is, we all struggle with something when it comes to the area of appetites. What is it that you’re struggling with, and how do you feel God calling you to exercise control over that in your daily life?”

Today, put in your mind that self-control prevents you from becoming enslaved to something (whatever that something may be). Starting today, become a master of your appetites. Direct your appetites toward those things that are good for you and genuinely help you to become your best self.

*Disclaimer: This is NOT ME. This is a stock photo. Though…this IS on my dream board, because one day, this WILL BE me.

I started my true yoga practice last summer. And I fell in love. It is challenging–yet relaxing and invigorating and allows me to get into my headspace. This morning I just really didn’t want to get out of bed (thanks Daylight Savings)…which means I REALLY didn’t want to go to yoga. But, I got out of bed. I got dressed and I went to yoga. And now I feel amazing.

So…this goes back to the lesson for the day. Self-control. The me a couple of months ago would have chosen sleep over yoga. But–my head wasn’t in the right place. These last few months I’ve been working really hard at getting my head in the right place, through various practices, and this morning, even though I didn’t want to, I got up and I went.

And I feel glorious.

Go do your thing. Set your mind a go. Don’t look back.

40 Days – Day 12

The enemy of character.

We all have one. The ego can be a very positive thing — or a very negative thing. God has a purpose for each of us, and because of that purpose, he has given us an ego. That inner voice that drives our purpose and passion. But sometimes, if we get too caught up in that ego, it can drive us to make very poor decisions.

Matthew Kelly states, “The number one way we reject reality is by placing ourselves at the center of the universe. And we all do it. We do it for moments. We do it for days, weeks, months, years. I see it with the kids. I see it with my own children. I see that there are stages in their development when they are clearly, firmly, and absolutely convinced that they are the center of the universe. Now, obviously they’re not able to articulate that, but the way they behave indicates that is the belief, that is the worldview, that they are operating out of.

Most people grow out of it, but I think an increasing number of people in our culture don’t grow out of it. And so, I guess part of the question is, “Who or what is at the center of your universe?” And it’s a question worth thinking about often, because I think that logically and intellectually and philosophically we can say, “Oh yeah, God is at the center of the universe,” and, “God is at the center of my universe,” or, “God is at the center of my life.” But it’s amazing how quickly we can displace him. It’s amazing how quickly, in different situations on different days, we can displace God from being at the center of our lives and be unaware of it.”

I wholeheartedly agree. I see it every day with my two year old and five year old. I saw it every day in the high school classroom. And unfortunately, I see it far too often in adults. Too many people have placed themselves at the center of the universe (in their minds) and don’t care about how their actions and words can devastate those around them. Too many people are so wrapped up in how others perceive them physically or socially, that they don’t care if people think they have poor character.

There have been moments (too many to recollect) that I have pushed away and decided to take on the universe all by myself. Do you know how well that worked out for me? It wasn’t until I came back to reality and realized that unless I gave myself 100% to Him, nothing else would fall into place.

Focus: We are not the center of the universe. If you try to place yourself there, you will set yourself up for disappointment and frustration.

Act: Look at your actions during the last 24 hours. When did you choose your authentic self, and when did you choose your ego? I’m going to add–what makes you allow your ego to take over? What are those characteristics that take away from your virtue and character? What causes these to overtake your mind? How can you stop that?

I’m thankful when friends expose me to new things. It is fun, it is exciting, and it is an extra bonus when it is super healthy for me.

Over a year ago, a dear friend introduced me to Ningxia and Thieves by Young Living. And I am so full of GRATITUDE to have those products in my daily life because they help me to promote wellness in my house.

This fall, another dear friend introduced me to Kombucha. My first thought was vinegar? Ugh, no thanks. But, I swallowed my pride and tried it. And my tummy felt AMAZING. (Want to learn what Kombucha is? You can go check out what Dr. Axe has to say about it here.) But to summarize what he says it can do for you and your body: helps prevent a variety of diseases, supports a healthy gut, can improve mental health, protects the lungs, antibacterial, helps manage diabetes, is beneficial to the cardiovascular system and helps maintain a healthy liver. Can we say WIN???

Greens are always good for you: they help promote your immune system, can aid in weight loss, can aid in fighting disease and illness, helps to provide more energy, helps to boost creativity and clear the mind and improve appearance. You can read more about greens and their benefits here. I’m thankful for my parents teaching me to appreciate the health benefits of greens at a very early age.

So go out and take a minute to sit down and examine yourself. Where does your PRIDE prohibit you? Where does your true self boost you? What do you do to help yourself? And finally…

What does your JOY and GRATITUDE look like today?

40 Days – Day 10

Best Lent Ever

So, today we are encouraged to think about the future. Yesterday, we were told to live in the now. Today, we can think about what happens next.

In order to be the best-version-of yourself, you want to have a good, no, a GREAT character. Think about someone with a not so great character. How does that person make you feel? Do you want others to feel that way about you? I don’t know about you, but I certainly do not. I want people to think about me and say, “she is only human. She makes mistakes. But you know what? She is a great person, with great character.” That is the ultimate compliment and I strive each and every day to get there.

The building blocks of a great character are virtues. Things like patience, and kindness, and generosity and courage. Be kind. Smile at a stranger. Then continue to build your virtues as each day goes on. Become that person you want everyone to think of you as.

Because when difficult moments come (and we all know we’re going to have some), what happens is your TRUE character is revealed. The very core of your existence is revealed for the whole world to see. Remember, you want them to see you as great person.

Character is the best investment you can make in the future you and in the future of those you love. To build that great character, choose a habit that will help you strengthen your character.

One thing that brings me great joy and makes me really sit down and examine what I am truly grateful for is my daily prayer and meditation routines. I already talked to you about my prayer routine, so today, I will focus on meditation.

I’ve been practicing meditation for almost a year now. I can always tell when I’m not giving myself the proper time. I start to feel it at my very core. Meditating has helped me make some very big, very crucial life changes. And I’m a better-version-of-myself because of it.

Meditating allows me to examine all aspects of my life. For awhile, I was having to do it in spurts–bits and pieces of time I could sneak away (driving, at lunch, etc). And I could feel myself starting to miss it terribly.

Meditation can be intimidating. Especially if you have a mind like mine (squirrel!). But thankfully, there’s an app (or several) for that! My personal favorite is Headspace. It starts at the very beginning of the meditation process and slowly walks you through learning how to get in your mind.

Another place I love to meditate is the Arkansas Prayer House. It is a hidden little gem off Chenal and is just so serene. So peaceful. Use a search engine to see if there is something like this in your area.

Finally, bringing essential oils into your meditation is very helpful. Today, I’m diffusing Lavender, Orange and Peppermint to bring pep into my step. Sometimes, I diffuse an oil that relates to the concept I am personally wanting to manifest in my life (i.e. Abundance, Acceptance, Believe, Highest Potential, etc). Other times I just need to be grounded and get my mind level headed, so I use oils like Vetiver and Cedarwood. If you have never tried oils or are not sure how to get started, please, leave a comment here or contact me on the Contact page and I will be ever so happy to get you started on this journey.

I challenge you to set aside 15-20 minutes a day for yourself and begin the meditating practice. I promise, you’ll love yourself for it.

I hope everyone stays dry and safe out there. My little state is getting pounded with rain and severe storms.
